Collection: Natural Selection

The series of works included under the title Natural Selection is both a tribute to the discoveries of naturalist Charles Darwin in the field of evolution and an ironic commentary on some of the conclusions that could be drawn from those discoveries: how is it possible that if all species are modified over time for better adaptation to the environment, then humankind expects the environment to adapt to its needs and whims? Under this premise, the first works in this series depict modified nature: fruits that grow with easy-open tabs or dotted lines indicating where they should be opened, sheep whose wool grows already patterned in colors, or trees whose branches produce pencils as they sprout. Later, the artist introduces the concept of the classical portrait, associated with the idea of the illustrious figure one might find throughout so many periods of art history in countless collections and museums. However, the subjects portrayed are not people, but animals of various kinds, primarily non-human primates. Sueiras' work is characterized by decontextualization, giving a twist to concepts already culturally assimilated and a kind of existentialism full of mystery, nostalgia and psychology, often wrapped under a cloak of irony and/or humor.
